Condition Of Umpires In The Present Scenario
Today, everyone, be it the coaches, parents, players or spectators, harass the umpires and blame them for everything that according to them is wrong. No doubt, nobody wants to become an umpire today. They have become an "extinct species"!
Actually, coaches are to be blamed for this condition of the umpires. The coaches emphasize only on winning. They have made it a prestige issue. When they confront the umpire, they set a very bad example before the young players. The kids follow the footsteps of their coach and will not hesitate to confront the umpire themselves.
It becomes difficult for parents to prevent their sons from seeing the disturbing scenes on Sports Center. But, it is very necessary to make the young kids understand the importance of treating the umpires with respect both as a player and a spectator.
But, the most disturbing thing is that now a days, even parents do not hesitate to barrage the umpire with all sorts of unkind words which are unfit to be heard by both spectators and the young players.
A zero tolerance policy for spectator parents have been instituted by many leagues and this results in ejection of both the parent and their player from the game if any sort of comment is made at the umpire.
In a baseball game, the umpire has complete authority over the players and the coaches right from the moment when he or she walks onto the field until the game is over.
It is an umpire"s duty to do justice and take a decision. Therefore, the coaches, the players, the parents and the scorekeepers should appreciate this role of an umpire.
When several young umpires are not given the same respect as the adult umpires, they get discouraged from continuing to work as an umpire.
Similarly, the umpires who are senior citizens at their retirement age, deserve the same respect as any other umpire.
It is not justified to make derogatory remarks or gestures towards an umpire. Before blaming others, improve yourself. You ought to set a good example before those who are younger to you.
Come on, it is just a game after all! It is not a matter of life and death.
