Utah Jazz Trying To Return To Elite Level
The Utah Jazz have not won a playoff series since 2000. After the departure of Karl Malone and John Stockton after the 2002-03 season, this is the first time that the Jazz have made it to the playoffs.
However, the Jazz players do not have much experience in playing in the playoffs. Just five players in the current Jazz team have won a series. Jazz guard Derek Fisher won three championships between 2000-02 while he was with the Lakers. Fisher does not think that playoff experience is a big issue. He thinks that his experience will come in use just in the first game and after that the team should be okay.
Utah is all set to open their playoff with Houston Rockets. During the regular season, the Jazz won three of their four games against the Rockets but lost 12 of their last 20 games and as a result, they had to let go of the home court advantage for the playoff series.
However, Matt Harpring thinks that the Jazz can shake off the losses that happened towards the end of the season. He said that the late season slide was tough but the team is over it and they are ready to go to Houston and win the game against the Rockets.
For the Rockets, Utah"s physical style of playing is a major concern for coach Jeff Van Gundy. While the Jerry Sloan, Utah"s coach, is busy trying to formulate a plan to stop Yao Ming.
On April 1, 2007 when the Jazz played the Rockets, Yao Ming had 35 points and 16 rebounds. Though the Jazz came from seven points down with three minutes left in the game to beat the Rockets 86-83, Sloan is aware that his team cannot let Yao Ming have too many games like this.
Sloan confessed that defending Yao Ming, who is 7 foot 6, is a difficult task but he would like his players to play hard and intelligently.
