NBA s Top Referee Suspended For Improper Behavior
Referee Joey Crawford will no longer be ejecting players and coaches this season. He was suspended indefinitely by commissioner David Stern for his behavior towards Tim Duncan.
Duncan said that Crawford challenged him to a fight during the game against Mavericks and with Duncan gone, the Mavs beat the Spurs, ending their chance of getting the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference.
Crawford has officiated more postseason games than any other active referee and his suspension is bound to last till the NBA final gets over. After that he would have to meet Stern to discuss about his reinstatement.
Since Rodney Mott got suspended for three games on January 12, 2007 for making an obscene gesture at a fan and using inappropriate language in Portland, Crawford is the first referee to get suspended.
Crawford comes from a family that is into officiating sports events. His father, Shag, was a major league umpire and now his brother, Jerry, is also one.
Crawford in now been an NBA referee for 31 seasons and he has officiated more than 2,000 games in regular season and 266 in playoffs, this includes 38 NBA finals.
However, Crawford is quite known for his temper. In Game 2 in the 2003 Western Conference finals between Spurs and Mavericks, Crawford called four technical fouls in the first 10 plus minutes and this led to the ejections of Don Nelson, the then Mavericks" coach, and Del Harris, the assistant coach.
When contacted about Crawford"s suspension, Nelson and Harris, who are now with the Golden State Warriors, refused to comment.
Crawford had called another technical foul against Duncan in another game recently and after the latest incident, Duncan feels that Crawford has a personal vendetta against him.
