The NBA Dream
As youngsters growing up, we learn to emulate and to praise those that do well in something we are interested in. We may choose to look at someone, who is great teacher, worker and in this case, a basketball player. Many people play basketball because several people can play at once and that it is fun and popular. What we do not realize is that many of the dreams we have, are impossible dreams.
As you get older, you will realize the difficulty in making basketball a career. With the vast amount of players, many take it to the extreme, many have alternative paths, and some are talented. In this country alone, there are millions who play this sport, some play it only occasionally while some really take it as an interest. Then certain variables come into play. You have to have a certain height for the position you play, certain strength, speed, skills and more. These factors are emphasized to a great degree in higher ranks because these are good indicators of how good of a player you can be. With a good foundation, there is nothing special that makes you good.
Everyone plays this sport which makes it that much harder. You have to compete with everyone else who also have the same dreams. There is only so many spots on a varsity team, college team and fewer in the pro ranks. Having a good set of skills is not going to cut it, especially when there will always be select groups that are super good. These players have things going for them that few have, such as motivation, size, etc.
Many of us kid ourselves when we think we can make it to the highest level because we all have to think of ourselves as good players in order to play good. However, when you face real competition, you will begin to understand how good even regular players can be. You have to be among the best players in the world to even be drafted. Following the NBA and having dreams to make it are nice to have, they keep things interesting for you, you can find inspiration in life but there is a moment where you have to acknowledge. The NBA dream is something almost impossible to achieve.
