Early NBA Pressures
When a rookie player starts out, there is a lot of pressure to succeed early on. These players have been given the chance to play and if they do not perform, they will suffer. In life, there is usually only a few chances to do something and if you miss, those chances are never given to you again. What makes the situation harder is that these rookies have the least amount of experience of anyone in the NBA. Lack of experience can lead to early mistakes, injuries and more. They have to get used to the travel, the lack of family care and the toughness of the veteran players. Sometimes, getting used to the NBA is half the trouble. Many of these young players struggle as a result.
When starting out, many of these players are not given much of a chance. They have to perform well when playing in order to make the starting unit. Since they are new to the system that the team works under, they are forced to learn, something that is hard especially if you are used to various systems already. There is a certain layer that first must be broken, in order to be on the level of wanting. Afterward, the rookies have to keep performing well and will be yelled and punished the most. If they are playing well, they may be forced to keep playing well. They may be forced to do the dirty work, such as helping others with their things, a test to prove that they are tough mentally and are able to contribute even when not playing. Even Tony Parker, the young guard for the Spurs, was yelled at by his coach even though he was trying hard.
Early temptations can crumble the future of once bright players, such as illegal activities, distractions, and the pursuit of money and fame. Some players may become lazy due to the fact that they have made it to the highest level. They made think that work is no longer needed to succeed. This is wrong because even the best can improve daily. If you do not continue to improve, you are left out. Take OJ Mayo, the hyped high school senior who was considered at one time a can"t miss product. Over a year and something, other players have shown that they are just as good if not better because they have been constantly improving. Although rookies make a good amount of money, it is not good enough if they are bounced early on. They may be left without work, and may lack needed skills. After surviving a few years, these players become much tougher and have a lesser chance to fail. The NBA is a testing ground and adjusting is vital.
