Miller Time in Boston?
Apparently the Celtics have been in touch with retired Indiana Pacers shooting guard Reggie Miller about joining the team as a role player. They have told the 42 year old Miller, that he will probably see about 10-12 minutes a game if he came out of retirement and joined the team. Just a few weeks ago the Celtics were one of the youngest teams in the NBA. Don"t get me wrong I think Danny Ainge made a great move going out and getting Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett, because veteran teams are the ones that win championships. But this is going a little too far. At this rate I wouldn"t be surprised if Ainge has been on the phone with Larry Legend trying to get him back in the Green and White. I mean why don"t we bring back Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley too...
The Celtics have a chance to do something special this year, but I have a hard time seeing where Reggie Miller fits into this plan. The Celtics need some guys who will get out of the way and let the "Big 3″ do their thing. Pierce, Allen, and Garnett are superstars, and should be All-Stars, we just need Rajon Rando to take care of the ball, distribute, and play good D. We don"t need him to push Reggie Miller"s wheelchair up and down the court, that"s not in his contract. Also the Celtics are really close to the Salary Cap, I don"t think we can afford to be shelling out the money for Miller"s retirement home staff to accompany him on every road trip. I mean unless the Celtics are content with Miller flashing Spike Lee the choke sign from the far end of the bench when the Celts travel to MSG, by all means offer the guy a deal. Reggie, currently in the midst of his illustrious TV analyst career with TNT, would probably be a bigger asset to the Celtics if they stuck him alongside Tommy Heinsohn in the booth for Fox Sports New England.
I am big on veteran leadership, and I think bringing in guys that have been in the thick of a playoff run before can never be looked at as a bad thing, but at some point you have to ask yourselves how much experience is too much. Sometimes at a job interview, the manager you interview with will say "I"m sorry I think you"re over qualified for this position". I think Danny Ainge needs to take that approach with Reggie, and let him know that while we appreciate his tremendous 18 year NBA career, and all those three"s he nailed in the clutch, but also that he"s a little "overqualified" to still be playing in the league. I guess we"ll see what happens in the coming weeks, but honestly if we"re going to bring back a guy over 40 with 10+ years of NBA experience coming from the Pacers organization, I"d rather see #33 lace "em up one last time.
