Is Cricket Becoming Another TV and Gambling Mecca?
Test status is conferred upon a country by the International Cricket Council and Test Matches are played between national representative teams which have "Test status", as determined by the International Cricket Council (ICC). However, cricket is becoming another TV and gambling mecca. The International Cricket Council sold broadcasting rights for the current and the next World Cup many dollars. Apparently, ticket sales were declining in international test matches and was one of the reasons why the ICC were deemed in some quarters to have 'Sold Out'. The current crisis within the international cricket community has perhaps been precipitated by the climate of suspicion and fear surrounding the war on terror and as a result, we are already seeing lesser number of people watching international cricket games compared to 5 years ago.
Is Cricket More Popular Than Any Other Game?
Cricket is more popular than any other game. This might be considered to be a bit of a random question, but it many Asian countries it is true. However, Test Cricket is now being superseded by limited overs cricket and it was hoped by the ICC that the new ranking system would help maintain interest in Test cricket in nations where one-day cricket is more popular. There are many forms and grades of cricket especially those played professionally at an international level including test cricket, one-day international and most recently, Twenty-twenty cricket. Would it not be better though for cricket to have fewer international matches, a slightly smaller ICC and less money, where a cricket world in which every tournament and Test match was genuinely a special occasion.
The Beginning of the End of Cricket

Cricket as an idea of national engagement also stands at this juncture of history. Its fort is being attacked. People are to a noticeable extent, even if temporarily, disengaged with this King of the games. What I witnessed was no where near to a hype that a world event like World Cup would create. The level of enthusiasm was definitely questionable. Going beyond this happening, its interesting to know why and how we reached at this stage. Everyone knows, this King of the sports has been ruling the hearts and minds of the people since a long time.
