Wakeboard Rope Basics

You cant use any old towrope when wakeboarding. Think twice before using a water ski rope for our wakeboarding. The basics of wakeboard ropes are covered here.

Rope Stretch

Non stretch ropes and needed when wakeboarding. Ropes that stretch recoil when the wakeboarder is airbourne, lessening the height that you reach. Stiffer ropes allow more control. How does this differ from the requirements of waterskiing? Ropes designed for waterskiing provide plenty of stretch, which helps pull you back and forth around the course and is alot more forgiving.

Towrope Length

Your performance behind the boat has alot to do with the length of the rope you choose. A good choice of length for the beginner wakeboarder to start with is around 45-50 feet. The length of line that you choose should make you feel comfortable when jumping and clearing the wake.

If you find that you are having trouble clearing the wake when you jump try shortening the rope. Shorter ropes place the boarder at a narrower section of the wake. The narrowest part of the wake is closest to the boat. The further the distance from the boat the greater the width of the wake. If you find that you are riding to much in the wash of the wake (choppy water) then you should try lengthening the rope.

When your wakeboarding skills and experience progress you can try moving to a longer length of rope like 50-55 feet long. Shorter ropes mean you will catch less air when jumping. The shorter your rope the less height youll be able to reach in the air. To perform tricks you often need as much airtime as you can get.
