For the experienced fisherman, the more remote streams in the Aberdares hold what you would expect: larger fish. Verify your route with a warden before going, but the largest fish caught in the Aberdares are often a result of long hikes through beautiful terrain. The bamboo line is mainly below the boundary of the park and has some very difficult-to reach streams, but the trout there are the largest in all of Aberdares.
The streams on Mt. Kenya are also worth while. If you are very fit, a seven -hour hike to Lake Alice will produce five-six pound rainbows. This requires camping for the night at 12,000 feet. Bring a warm sleeping bag.
It is easy to find the Sirimon River on the northwestern side of Mt. Kenya. About 15kilometres past Nanyuki, a sign on the right points to the Sirimon Gate. The unmarked road on the left leads to the river. After turning off the main road, take the first right to an open area below the road (only 10 minutes from the highway). Park. Walk upstream. You will find many pools with overhanging branches to test your patience and skill.
The Cherengani Hills are known to hold the biggest brown trout in all of Kenya, but it is a long drive from Nairobi. Nearby bandas may be booked in Nairobi, and the proprietor will gladly give directions to fishing spots.
Many dams in the highlands also hold fish, but the best ones are on private property so getting written permission is a must. The Kericho area is very accessible to the beginner, with streams and dams controlled by the Kericho Sotik Fishing Association.
For a day trip from Nairobi, try the stream on top of the Rift valley escarpment on the road to Lake Naivasha. After you go under the overpass (about 40 minutes from Nairobi) take your first right. Turn right again and follow the road to a village. Ask for directions to the river. For a small tip, you can hire a guide who knows exactly where the good pools are. You should always bring a guard to stay with your car while you are fishing.
Trout fishing in Kenya is always changing. Some places are better at different times of the year.
Nile Perch
If you are after Nile perch, you can go to Lake Turkana or to Lake Victoria. Going to Lake Victoria is the easier trip, and there are several luxurious fishing lodges on various islands, where fish over 100 pounds are brought in regularly.
Lake Turkana has tiger fish in addition to perch, but a rough two-day drive or a chartered flight are the only two ways of reaching the lake. The lodges around the lake and on Central Island are very Spartan, and a private tented safari is the better way to go, though pricey.
Bass
Bass fishing in is not exceptional in Kenya, but if you are visiting Lake Naivasha, why not try it? Some fish are more than five pounds, and some boats have brought in as many as 50 fish.
Four hours from Nairobi, Mr. Clive Aggett has a ranch near Rumuruti with dams holding bass and rainbow trout. You can book a cottage on his largest dam. Commercial duck shooting could be combined with fishing.
Across Kenya, there are many small ponds, dams and streams which may be worth trying. Any fisherman however knows that catching a fish is never a sure bet. No matter what the catch, however, fishing in Kenya always takes you to beautiful settings which never fail to lure anglers back to Kenya.
