How To Use Live Worms As Bait For Trout Fishing
It may sound silly to write an article on how to use live worms as bait for trout fishing, but I've seen so many anglers using live worms in the improper manner that I figured that I could write an article and do some good. Why do I know how to use live worms in true proper manner, rather than the improper manner? Because more than 20 years ago I was taught the proper manner by a worm fishing master. I refer to this man as a 'master' simply because he caught more large trout out of heavily fished rivers and streams than anyone I've ever known. He used a simple technique that enabled live worms to be presented in a totally natural manner, which he said was the key to using worms as bait for trout fishing.
He called this key to presenting worms in a totally natural manner a set of gang hooks. A set of gang hooks are simply a pair of small hooks tied in tandem, which when attached to a persons fishing, enables live worms to be presented outstretched, the way God intended. Gang hooks are how to use live worms as bait when trout fishing, according to this man. And I would have to agree, seeing as how for the last 20 years I've personally been using them with amazing success.
This is exactly how a set of pre-tied gang hooks can be rigged up: Begin by tying a small barrel swivel onto your line (usually size 10 or 12). Now tie a set of pre-tied gang hooks onto the opposite end of the barrel swivel. Add split shot sinkers above the swivel for weight. Now add a live worm to the gang hooks (if the worms are large, simply pinch them in half). If this rig is fished in the flowing water of a river or stream the results are deadly.
Any time that you're thinking of using live worms as bait for trout fishing, you need to have five or ten sets of pre-tied gang hooks available and ready to go. If you use live worms as bait for trout fishing, my mentor believed in having an efficient way to carry live worms as well. The best way to do this is through the use of a Bait Bag. With a bait bag your live worms are always literally at your fingertips whenever you need to bait up.
The bottom line is that if you didn't know how to use live worms as bait for trout fishing, know you do. I've personally use gang hooks for all of my fishing, and this most certainly goes for trout fishing. Never forget what Steven Wright said of us anglers, "There's a fine line between fishing and just standing on the bank looking like an idiot." I couldn't agree more, there is a very fine line and with the help of this article, hopefully you can avoid the 'looking like an idiot' part of that quote. I know from experience that these techniques work and will work for you just like they do for me.
