A New Season for Tony Romo and the Dallas Cowboys
Tony Romo"s 2006 season with the Dallas Cowboys didn"t end on a good note, to say the least. Cowboys" fans everywhere, and Tony Romo himself, are hoping that things will be different this year and that the memory of last season"s first round play-off game will soon become a very distant memory.Despite intriguing some scouts, Tony Romo out of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, went undrafted in the 2003 NFL Draft. The Cowboys subsequently signed him as an undrafted rookie free agent. Romo bided his time behind quarterback greats Vinny Testaverde and Drew Bledsoe.
Although having had strong showings in the 2005 and 2006 pre-seasons, Tony Romo was barely on the radar when he took to the field last year with the Cowboys. It didn"t take long for him to prove himself, however, and by October he had become the star of America"s Team. In October of 2006 he officially took over the role of starting Dallas Cowboys quarterback.Romo finished the regular season by helping his team clinch a playoff berth, the second since Bill Parcells became the Dallas Cowboys coach in 2003. In December of 2006 it was announced that Romo, in his first year as a starter, would be attending the Pro Bowl.
Things appeared to be going great for Romo and the Cowboys. Unfortunately for Romo and the Dallas Cowboys the 2006 season did not conclude on a bright note. With approximately a minute left in the game, and trailing the Seattle Seahawks 21-20, Tony Romo botched a hold on a 19 yard field goal attempt which would ultimately seal the fate of the Cowboys season. After fumbling the snap, Romo picked up the ball and ran to the end zone but was tackled two yards short of the goal line and one yard short of a first down. The Dallas Cowboys gave the ball over on downs to Seattle. A last second attempt by Romo at a Hail Mary pass fell short and the Cowboys season came to and end. Although Tony Romo ended the season crushed and feeling responsible for the Cowboys first round exit in the play-offs he demonstrated that he is starting quarterback material and is capable of leading his team to greatness.
All eyes will be on Romo as the Dallas Cowboys take to the field for the 2007 season. New Dallas Cowboys head coach, Wade Phillips, will be on the sideline and everyone will be watching to see how Romo reacts the next time bad fortune strikes. Once considered an undrafted afterthought, Tony Romo has always been out to prove he belongs. The events of last season"s play-off game will make him even more determined to prove he"s right where he belongs.
