A Look in College Football s Rear View Mirror - The Worst of 2006

A Trip Down Football's Memory Lane Before kicking off another season, let us take one last look at the season past to remember the good times. And to put the bad ones to a dignified end. Lessons of the past may be useful in preventing failures in the future. Unfortunately, many of the schools that appeared in the 2006 FirstWorst Futility rankings seem destined to stay there. There are some perennial powerhouses that live among the FirstWorst. The Bleu Devils of Duke know this place well. Although Army and Navy have a fabulous record turning out people who can blow things up and take things from other people, Army can rarely manage to produce more than a 3-and-out on the gridiron.

Fate of a Fullback

Our team physician ran his hand up under my shoulder pads and instantly found his mark. "Thought so - it"s dislocated, " he said. And before I could mutter a single syllable, the 80-year old relic started pulling off his hushpuppy while I lay flat out. "Don"t fight me on this one son, " he said. "Just relax, I"m gonna try something here." "Something here" - that"s it? That"s the most medically advanced approach at his disposal? He pushed his foot into my armpit and pulled firmly on my wrist until we both heard a loud thud. I looked at him and he back at me - neither of us reacted, but we both knew instantly that the arm was now "relocated." And as I ambled back to the sidelines, the good doctor looked every bit as surprised by the outcome as me.

A Story From The Stands - What Have Former Nebraska Football Players Learned From The Game - Bando

CLIMB OUT OF THE BUCKET The big dream almost came true for Tom Banderas when he was a Nebraska freshman. He almost got a National Championship ring but Turner Gill's two-point conversion pass was just a tick off the mark and the rings went to the Miami Hurricanes instead. Unfortunately for "Bando" as he was quickly nicknamed, he and his Husker teammates wouldn't be back in the National Championship game during his career at Nebraska. The big outside defensive end was a highly recruited Oak Grove, Missouri product. Oklahoma came calling. So did arch rival Texas, home state Missouri, Notre Dame and USC. But Nebraska got him. "Charlie McBride recruited me, " Banderas explained.

Defusing Parent Hassles in Youth Football

Defusing Problem Parents in Youth Football Never arrive at football practice and games too early and just loligag around, that is an invitation for parents to get their little points in. Be a whirlwind of activity, pass out your daily football practice plans with your coaches, get your drills lined up with cones, instruct proper technique for kids doing pre-practice drills or discuss player development with one of your assistant coaches. If the parents see you wasting time they feel it is a license to waste your time also. If they see you are busy and there won"t be an opening to talk with you, they won"t usually bother you. After practice don"t wait around, assign an assistant coach to be the last one at football practice that day to make sure all the kids get rides home.

How To Put on a Successful Youth Football Camp

Football Camps For Youth Football Players We do a one day camp in June or July. We have done week long and three day camps but now just do one day camps. Our goals for these pre-season camps are just to get a peek at what we have talent wise, get the kids to understand how they are to interact with the coaching staff and to have fun. We have an entire month to prepare for our first game, we can get any conditioning we need during regular football practice. Conditioning this far out from the first practice and for such a short duration is counterproductive to what we are trying to accomplish during the camp. We feel very strongly that with the very narrowly defined football practice priorities we adhere to, we can get our evaluations, base skills and schemes put in during the one month of football practices prior to that first game.

Game Day Nutrition for High School Football Players

To enhance performance and increase endurance effectively, each young athlete and their parents should make proper nutrition, on and off the field, a high priority. Proper nutrition takes planning and preparation and begins at home. Proper nutrition will not only help build strong bodies, but also strong minds. And it will set each young athlete on the road to a healthy adulthood. Game day nutrition is especially important because the proper nutrients will help regulate blood sugar and keep energy levels up. Whey protein will help build lean muscle and assist in recovery. Staying hydrated will also help with recovery from exertion. 1-2 hours prior to workout, conditioning, practice or event: Prepare for exercise by hydrating your body and consuming a small amount of carbs to provide adequate fuel during exercise and prevent fatigue while still allowing the stomach to be relatively empty at start of competition/workout, preventing GI distress and discomfort during exercise.

Football Supporters: No Vacation for the Overcharged and Underappreciated

The airports are jammed with sun seekers and Wimbledon is rained off, it must be the English Summer. For the nation"s footballers this is supposed to be a time of rest and recuperation before a gruelling pre-season in July. Unfortunately, the supporters aren"t so lucky. Any football fan worth their salt knows that summer is not an end to the season or a break between them, but the beginning of the next one. For some, the summer months are where the enjoyment in the game lies, where expectations exaggerate with every linked superstar or promising starlet. This is when a fan can dream, before the games start and the reality kicks in. This year there is no World Cup fever.

Football Position Drills - Proper Footwork for Quarterbacks

This article will focus on the proper way a young football quarterback should practice in preparation for an upcoming season or game. Obviously the information that will be taught is not designed to replace practices organized by a coach or team; rather the quarterback drills and techniques that will be taught are designed to be utilized during off-season or in-season training, or what I like to call individual practices. They are designed to be done by yourself, or with another training partner or coach. The drills and techniques taught are currently being utilized by NFL coaching staff and Division I programs throughout the country. The purposes of these drills are to begin training your body to prepare for any and all situations that may occur in a game and to transform yourself from being a "good" to great!

National Football League: Say No to Thugs! Part One

"What the heck is going on out there???" the Great Man would say if he were here today commenting on the numerous incidents of National Football League players getting arrested-for all sort of crimes, from DUI, to physical violence to weapons charges. It"s really depressing when you look at the National Football League headlines on Web sites like ESPN.com and most of what you find involves reports of players getting in trouble with the law. Sports are supposed to be a pleasant diversion from the ugliness we see in the international news headlines, or the forecasts for the real estate market. The bright new NFL Commissioner, Roger Goodell, obviously wants to solve this problem, and he seems to be trying to get the message across that thug-like behavior won"t be tolerated.
